Very nice early coal mining piece with a great vignette of an early steam locomotive hauling coal with a mine in the background. Unissued and not cancelled. Circa 1860 from company records and newspaper articles.
The Standard Coal Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania, with offices in Pittsburg, Altoona, and Harrisburg. The company operated mines in the Somerset County area, Cambria County, and Allegheny County. The companies also operated coal mines in West Virginia, Utah, and Virginia. The company laso built and ran short line railroads to move coal from the mines to nearby depots.
