In 1982, the Milwaukee-based Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, the nation's ninth-largest life insurance company, and the real estate investment trust which it advises, Northwestern Mutual Life Mortgage and Realty Investors, jointly announced that they had entered into an agreement in which Northwestern Mutual Life will acquire the trust for $65.5 million.
Northwestern Mutual Life, which was also in the process of acquiring a brokerage firm and an insurance company, said the offer would be conditioned upon a minimum of 3.3 million shares, or 68 percent of the currently outstanding shares, being tendered.
