Incorporated in 1969 in Delaware, the company was founded by Howard Terry, originally as Business Funds Inc. It built oil rigs worldwide. The company also owned the John Brown Shipyards that once built the HMS Hood, the Queen Elizabeth, and QE2. Later the company was acquired by Penn Central Corporation in 1979 during its diversification phase. Marathon Manufacturing was a multiproduct firm serving industries in marine construction and transportation, heavy equipment and steel products, as well as a group of diversified companies producing chemicals, batteries, consumer goods, and providing construction services.
