Iowa Homestead Company stock certificate circa 1864

Nice older piece on lightly printed paper with an eagle vignette in the same color as the cert printing,  Unissued and not cancelled. Circa 1864.

The company owned and developed lands North of Des Moines, Iowa under the 1846 federal river grant.  Dubuque & Sioux City Railroad Company worked with the Iowa Homestead Company  to establish both farms and developed lands along the railway. The Iowa Homestead Company battled in court over lands distributed by the grant. The original grant was focused on navigable waters and did not anticipate the railroad expansion,   Having lost in state courts, their federal court win brought additional consideration of authority between state and federal courts.
